Does Compostable Packaging Reduce Microplastics?

When conventional plastic breaks down, through abrasion in transit, weathering at sea, or slow degradation in landfill, it does not disappear. Both made the shift despite compostable being harder and more expensive, because the microplastics trade-off was unacceptable for brands built on reducing environmental harm.

When is PCR the better answer than compostable?

When the composting benefit will not be realised. Two examples make the point. A Spanish specialty roaster moved from a previous supplier's compostable bags, which broke in distribution, to a more durable PCR option with reinforced hardware. It was not a rejection of compostability; it was a supply-chain durability decision, because compostable films are lighter and more fragile and its wholesale transit was demanding.

A US supplement brand spent time on compostables before moving to PCR under cost pressure and the reality that US composting infrastructure is patchy. Without facilities that accept compostable packaging, the material's primary benefit goes unrealised, so high-content PCR delivered comparable carbon with real soft-plastic recovery.

A London roaster went the other way and kept a home-compostable laminate despite the cost and difficulty, because microplastics reduction was mission-critical. The material choice followed the problem each brand was solving.

What three conditions make compostable the right call?

First, your audience actually composts or has access to industrial composting. D2C beauty and home brands tend to skew toward composting-engaged consumers, which is the highest-probability fit.

Second, your supply chain can tolerate the durability trade-off: light products and short transit favour compostable, while heavy products, long supply chains, and rough handling favour PCR.

Third, you have honestly costed the material and the infrastructure. Compostable materials have lower production carbon than virgin LDPE, but higher carbon than PCR LDPE where recycled feedstock is available, so if recycled content is scarce or the pack is unlikely to reach a composting facility, PCR is often the more defensible choice.
