Blue Carbon

Grounded Packaging has always taken a data-informed and science-backed view of sustainability. This ethos is what has positioned us at the forefront of sustainable packaging innovation, working to help brands make genuinely better packaging decisions.

Like many things in our business, as our knowledge of the impact even the leading sustainable packaging solutions have on our environment continued to deepen, so did our discomfort in sitting with reducing harm rather than doing good.

Neutrality means you are not making things worse. We want to help make things better.

That is why we partnered with SeaTrees in 2022, a nonprofit focused on restoring coastal and marine ecosystems.

How it works

Every order placed through Grounded directly funds the programme. We purchase the credits and plant the mangroves on behalf of our customers, so if you're a customer, every order you've placed since 2022 has contributed to the project details shown below, from the Mida Creek and Marereni sites in Kenya to the carbon projects in Colombia and Cambodia. It just happens as part of working together.

Every order funds verified ocean restoration.

Through our partnership with SeaTrees, every custom order you place with Grounded Packaging funds the restoration of mangroves and coastal blue carbon ecosystems, which capture carbon several times faster than tropical rainforests.

This is impact you can stand behind and report, not a vague pledge. Each token sequesters one tonne of CO2 through VCS-certified carbon credits and plants three mangrove biodiversity trees.

To date, Grounded orders have funded:

5,400
Tonnes of carbon offset through VCS/CCBA certified (triple certified) carbon credit carbon projects in Colombia and Cambodia
16,200
Mangroves restored at Mida Creek and Marereni, Kenya
Dense mangrove forest with exposed roots along a calm waterway on Colombia's Pacific coast

Pacific Coast, Colombia

896 credits
Equivalent to 896 tonnes of carbon offset to date.

Protects 117,740 hectares of coastal watershed along Colombia's Pacific coast — mangroves, marshes and streams in a region home to 10% of all animal and plant species on Earth. Collectively owned and run by local Afro-descendent and Indigenous communities.

4,504 credits
Equivalent to 4,504 tonnes of carbon offset to date.

Protects 497,000 hectares of coastal watershed in Cambodia's Cardamom Mountains, including 2,000+ hectares of pristine mangrove forest. Safeguards 35+ IUCN-threatened species and supports 16,000+ people across 29 villages.

The science

Why coastal marine ecosystems?

SeaTrees works exclusively on blue carbon coastal ecosystems, and for good reason:

The ocean is the planet's primary carbon system.

90%
of all carbon in the global carbon cycle is stored in the ocean.

Mangroves outperform rainforests at storing carbon.

5–10×
more CO₂ sequestered per hectare than tropical rainforests.

A thank you to our customers

Every credit is purchased on behalf of our customers, at no additional cost and with nothing required from them. None of it happens without you choosing Grounded, so thank you. Every order you place grows this coastline a little further.

Curious what your orders have contributed to this coastal restoration? We'd love to show you.

Thank you,
The Grounded Team
